» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Jude Mathis
Canon & MEDIUM: Tales of Xillia | Video Game
Canon PULL-POINT: On the Exodus ship, immediately after the battle with Gilland.
Character AGE: 15
Character ABILITIES: Despite being a fifteen year old med student, Jude is fairly skilled in hand to hand combat. He's fights mainly with his fists and utilizes his speed coupled with brute force to take down foes. He also has the uncanny ability to read his opponents movements and move behind them for a sneak attack. It's an actual ability in the game! But outside of video game battles all of this amounts to Jude being a good fighter without the use of special skills.
That doesn't mean he doesn't have special skills, however. Jude comes from a world where people have something called a Mana Lobe that produces mana as the name might suggest. So... ability number one! Jude has the ability to produce mana.
Jude's also a healer (though compared to some of the other people on his party, not much of one). He's got some minor healing skills and can fix various injuries people sustain with... a glowy light thing. This works for both external injuries as well as internal problems people might be suffering. Coupled with his medical training he's pretty good at fixing problems.
And then there's the spirit artes. There is a wiki page that lists his artes, and I feel like that'd be easier to link than to try to explain every single ability one by one, but I can try listing the whole thing out if you want! What it really amounts to is various types of (sometimes elemental) attacks he can do in battle beyond punching things really hard in the face.
Character HISTORY: Once there was a world called Elympios that functioned like most habitable worlds in any work of fiction would. There were plants, animals, people, and spirits. Oh wait, are those not always included in fictional worlds? Well they are here! In fact, the spirits played a very important role on Elympios. Now when I say spirits, I want you to think more nature spirits and less "Alison this is your grandpa talking to you from beyond the grave. Please make sure I turned the oven off before I kicked it" spirit. These spirits could be very basic and not hold a whole lot of power (less spirits) to being frighteningly strong and revered by people (greater spirits).
The problem was the people of Elympios would use devices know as Spyrix to harness the power of the spirits. Why is that so bad? You might be wondering, because I want to put words in your mouth. Well, my friend who I am speaking for, because Spyrix technology has this little downside of killing the spirits in the process. And boy oh boy were the people of Elympios killing spirits left and right as they learned to rely more and more on Spyrix technology.
Eventually the Lord of Spirits, Maxwell, realized that the spirits make eventually die off completely, and with how heavily people on Elympios relied on the spirits power, they too would die off. So he did what any sensible spirit lord would do... he created a separate zone safe for spirits known Rieze Maxia. To ensure that Rieze Maxia would be safe from Elympios' fate Maxwell made sure of two things. The first was that the people of Rieze Maxia came equipped fully Mana Lobes that allowed people to harness the power of the spirits while feeding mana back to them allowing for a symbiotic relationship between spirits and people. The second was to place a giant impassable barrier called the schism between Rieze Maxia and Elympios. In fact, the people of Rieze Maxia became completely unaware about the existence of Elympios altogether and were able to settle their land and grow alongside the spirits.
Maxwell also created a spirit known as Milla to act as the Maxwell of Rieze Maxia and watch over the spirits, though he wanted Milla to play a role in keep the schism as it should be as well. Milla herself was not aware of this.
Meanwhile, back with the people of the Rieze Maxia... for a long time civilization grew and developed technology and blah blah blah, the point here is that the people of Rieze Maxia were just as reliant on spirits as the people of Elympios, but unlike the people of Elympios the spirits of Rieze Maxia were able to grow fat and happy off of people's mana and not die horribly. So things were pretty great! Until about twenty years before the main story begins. A group of people from Elympios who would become known as Exodus, managed to breach the schism and make their way to Rieze Maxia. They wanted to destroy the schism and supply the dying world of Elympios with the spirits of Rieze Maxia.
Instead of joining in with vaguely nefarious schemes one of the members of Exodus ended up settling down in a town called Leronde, becoming a doctor and having a son. That kid? Jude Mathis, obviously.
Jude, like most people of Rieze Maxia, started off completely unaware about the existence of Elympios. He grew up in the small town of Leronde hanging out with his friend Leia, and eventually at a young age heading off to a medical institution in the city of Fennmont to study to become a doctor like his parents.
For while things seemed to be going swimmingly. Jude's studies were going well, and despite only being fifteen he was on a fast track to his goals of a medical profession. Until the fateful day he met Milla and everything in his life ended up turned on its head. The excitement started out when Jude was told that his professor had been nominated for a highly prestigious award, and when Jude goes to the military facility where his professor is doing research he is denied entrance. While debating where to go from there he sees a woman (Milla) literally walking across the water that surrounds the facility, and drops the message for his professor down where she is taking her watery stroll. Running down to retrieve it he ends up witnessing Milla breaking into the facility, and after a short exchange where she tells him to go home ends up following her inside instead.
By then Milla has disappeared and Jude travels alone in search of his professor. Well... he finally finds the man, but not in the way Jude would have wanted. His professor was being used for some sort of human research being carried on in the military facility, and dies in front of Jude. Shortly after a girl who is about Jude's age ends up attacking him and would kill him if it wasn't for Milla's intervention. The girl runs off and Jude ends up accompanying Milla in her search through the facility.
As it turns out Milla here is the is the Lord of Spirits, Maxwell... or, as I mentioned already that's what she thought. She was looking for something called the Lance of Kresnik, a giant Spyrix weapon made to turn the tide of war in an instant (but kill tons of spirits in the process). When Jude and Milla manage to locate the lance the girl that assaulted Jude has found it as well and it ends up being activated. Before Milla and Jude die the four great spirits (who represent fire, earth, water and air and were traveling with Milla) make a sacrifice to protect her, asking Jude to watch after Milla since they will not be able to. The four are trapped in the Lance and Milla and Jude end up falling as the room they're in crumbles.
To make a long story as short as possible, because of their breaking and entering of the military facility Jude and Milla end up as wanted fugitives. They are saved by a mercenary named Alvin, and travel to Milla's town of Nia Khera as they try to decide what to do next. Along the way they meet a small girl named Elize, who has a talking doll named Teepo that Jude talks Milla into letting him bring along. They end up in a town called Sharilton where they meet Driselle and Cline Sharil, and their butler, Rowan. Cline is in charge of Sharilton and one of the blue bloods of Rashugal (the country that Jude is from and the Lance of Kresnik was created in). However, when Alvin tips Cline off on how Milla and Jude are Cline reveals that he is also against the behavior of Rashugal's king, Nachtigal, and has no intention of turning them over to the authorities.
During some more adventuring where Rowen joins them, more human experimentation is uncovered and the party manages to save Cline and others from having their mana stripped away. They return to Sharilton, and as Driselle drags Milla and Elize off to go shopping, Jude and Alvin stay behind to talk to Cline. Cline asks for Jude's help in saving the world from what Nachtigal is doing, and as the two boys are about to shake in agreement, Cline is assassinated by an archer that was camped out on the roof. Meanwhile the girls are attacked by soldiers in town and taken to another military facility.
Jude, Alvin, and Rowan embark and a mission to save them, and while they end up completing a successful rescue events in the military complex lead to Milla's legs being completely unusable. Jude then brings Milla back to his hometown of Laronde in order to meet his dad, who has successfully restored someone's ability to walk before.
When his dad refuses to offer assistance Jude goes to find the needed materials for the procedure himself with the help of his friend Leia. After a three week period where Milla is allowed to recover, Rowan, Elize, and Alvin show up and set off with Jude and Milla (Leia sneaking after them and becoming the six party member). The party travels back to the country of Auj Oule.
Woo boy! This history is getting wordy. Well, in interest of trying to wrap things up here the party travels around quite a bit and finally meets the kind of Auj Oule, Gaius, and his Chimeriad, Agria (the girl that attacked Jude back at the beginning of this history section), Presa and Jiao (who they'd previously run into), and Wingul. Some more traveling about and the party ends up back in Rashugal and finally take Nachtigal on and defeat him. By the end of the battle the king seems to realize what he's done wrong, but before he can have any sort of chance at redemption he is murdered by some unseen force. The party meanwhile scrambles to find the Lance of Kresnik, only to find it has been stolen by Gaius and a war between Auj Oule and Rashugal breaks out.
Jude and his companions join in the war in a mad scramble to get to the Lance of Kresnik before the weapon can be used. Well that's when everything seems to come to a head. The party has to fight through the Chimeriad to reach Giaus, and then they do the former right hand of King Nachtigal, Gilland, reveals himself as head of Exodus, and reveals the true purpose of the Lance.
You see, it was never meant to be used as a weapon... not against people anyway. The Lance of Kresnik was designed by Exodus to break through the schism so they could give the power of Rieze Maxia to Elympios. And what do you know? The Lance is activated and a hole is blasted in the schism. Airships from Elympios pour into Rieze Maxia and chaos ensues.
In the madness Jude ends up being knocked into a river and carried into the ocean. Miraculously Jude survives despite having been unconscious the entire time and traveling through freezing waters. I'm still not entirely sure how that happened. Regardless! Jude lives through it all and wakes up on a frozen beach where he meets a spirit named Muzét, who is Milla's sister. Jude directly tethers with Muzét to help restore her powers by giving her his mana and the two set off to find the rest of the party.
They end up close to the capital of Auj Oule, reunite with the rest of the party, and help Gaius and his group to retake the capital (which had been taken over by Exodus). They manage to acquire one of Exodus' airships and fly to the ship holding the Lance of Kresnik so they can try to prevent Gilland from using it again. It's during their travels around the ship that I'm apping Jude so this is the end of the history section!
Hooray!
Character PERSONALITY: Jude's most instantly noticeable trait is his massive bleeding heart. I'm not exaggerating when I say Jude takes being a good guy to the logical extreme, and he's earned his reputation as a goody two-shoes among his travel companions. Whenever he sees someone in trouble or suffering Jude tends to want to sidetrack the mission in order to help them out, despite being under something of a time crunch. It's not that Jude is easily distracted as it is that Jude's empathy levels are through the roof and it's hard for him to just turn away from people in need. The problem is the mission he's agreed to go on is important for keeping two countries from going into all out war and causing the loss of many lives, while Jude seems ready to waste precious time helping small groups of people whenever they pop up along the way. Jude unfortunately tends to get caught up on the here and now, which makes it easier for him to forget the bigger picture.
This also means that Jude will go to great lengths to try and keep his friends safe. If there's one thing you can't fault Jude on, it's his loyalty. If there is one thing you can fault him on it's his naivety. And when I say to a fault, I mean it. He is betrayed over and over by Alvin, and while he isn't the only person to let Alvin back onto the team even after these multiple betrayals, he is one of the few to voice the fact that he honestly wants to believe in Alvin despite his anger and frustration with the man. He can be ridiculously quick to offer up second chances at times even when he shouldn't. Admittedly the more time that goes on the more Jude wises up and stops fully trusting Alvin, but that still doesn't do anything to stop Alvin's near constant betrayals for a good part of the game.
Speaking of wising up, lets talk about Jude's intelligence for a second. The fact that he's a fifteen year old who was on the verge of graduating med school should give you an idea of how smart this kid is. He might not have a lot of real world knowledge, but boy is the kid booksmart, and surprisingly manages to apply that knowledge in his travels. He seems to have an almost encyclopedic knowledge base at times, and from everything he's read over the years Jude is surprisingly good at picking out various abnormalities in the environment and using it to his advantage to help him escape dangerous situations. On top of that his intelligence and good observational skills come in hand in an actual fight too. He's good at reading the enemies movement and dodging attacks, as well as having a keen sense of the enemies movement that allows him to easily sneak up behind his foe, and hero or not he's not ashamed to use that to his advantage.
For a lack of worldly experience Jude's also pretty good at dealing with people. Without even trying he's pretty good at endearing himself to the people around him by being a genuine and helpful person, but the fact that he isn't half bad at reading situations definitely helps. That pesky desire of his to help people means he also tends to go out of his way to make sure the people around him are doing okay emotionally as well as physically, and he tends to have a pretty good sense of what the right thing to say in most situations is. At his heart he's atiny big shonen.
That's not to say Jude doesn't have his own problems. Jude's got some serious daddy issues going on. In general Jude's got a somewhat strained relationship with his parents, who were both too busy with work throughout his life to really give their son the time he probably needed. While he doesn't seem particularly resentful of his mom for this fact, it's pretty clear in their meeting that Jude has some issues with his father. Admittedly, his father is kind of a dick, and doesn't seem like the kind of man that's good at expressing himself in a positive way. This leads to Jude butting heads hard with his dad more or less any time they talk in the game. While at this point in his life Jude is usually pretty even tempered his dad manages to make what temper he does have flare up with almost no effort at all.
But then Jude is still a kid and a certain rebelliousness towards parents that can be expected. If anything it's remarkable that despite his age Jude manages to be as mature as he is when it comes to handling himself and other people, and has relatively few childish episodes. His ability to read people helps to not only impress the people that like him, but often to diffuse situations as well. He tends to handle situations with a sort of even headed attitude one wouldn't usually expect from someone his age. Whether it's managing to calm down someone when they're angry, or not taking the bait when people are trying to get a rise out of him. That's not to say he's always on top of these things. Jude can be pushed into fights or getting snappish at times, and boy is it easy to make this kid blush.
If you're really looking to something that points to Jude still being a kid, his lack of direction in life does it. Before Milla came along Jude felt that he was more or less floating through life. He admits at one point in the game that often times people's career paths are determined by their spiritual skillset. In Jude's case, because his parents were both doctors and he has some talent with healing, it meant he was more or less destined to be a doctor. He doesn't feel he has a real purpose in life at that point, and it isn't until Milla that he he feels he really finds one. As the journey goes on Jude realizes that instead of living his life as a doctor he'd rather spend it helping Milla in any way he can, and even asks her if he can stay by her side after everything is all over. Milla helps Jude start to take the steps needed for him to be able to move towards the goals he chooses for himself.
His other problem is that he's a pretty passive person, especially in comparison to Milla. For most of the game Jude is more than ready to follow Milla and go along with what she's doing, like he is her baby chick. When he wants to diverge from what they're doing and sidetrack the group by helping various people in trouble, Milla lets him know that she respects his wishes, but that will mean the two of them will part ways. Instead of following his own moral compass Jude hesitates and continues to go along with Milla and her plans. It's not that he is forced to abandon what he wants to do either, Milla makes it very clear that Jude is responsible for his own choices and puts no pressure on him to continue his travels with her, but instead of carving out his own path and following his own moral compass there are times that Jude's will bends so that he can stay by Milla's side.
He admits this is a fault of his, and admires strong willed people like Milla or Gaius. In fact, it doesn't matter if someone is his enemy or not (like Gaius is at points in the canon), the determination and strength they have still impresses him even if he doesn't agree with the ideas they're supporting with that strength of will. Their conviction (especially Milla's) inspires Jude to try and overcome his own passive behavior so he can be the kind of person that stands by his ideals and goals no matter what adversity he faces in life. Though at the canon point I am taking him from he has not realized his goal to become more like Milla and Gaius, he's certainly started to move forward with it.

Chosen WEAPON: The set of braces that he was wearing when showing up. Jude's world relies so heavily on the power of spirits to do anything from powering their street lamps to helping people perform special magicesque skills, as such the lack of spirits in this world would normally throw the kid off pretty badly.
That's were his bracers come in! While they won't add to his physical strength they will provide him the same power that the spirits of his world do so there's no change to how he functions. Well... sort of! At first no matter how much mana he feeds into the bracers they will only be able to give him a limited amount of power meaning things like his healing abilities will be weaker than what he's used to. The more mana he feeds into the bracers over time, the more power they'll be able to give back to him.
When they reach their limit of growth the braces should be able to produce a great deal of power for very little mana input from Jude. Though there is still a limit to what Jude himself is actually able of accomplish no matter how much power he's given.
BASICALLY to make this as simple as possible, Jude's bracers will be like a battery to power his magic-y skills.
Character INVENTORY: The clothing on his back, which is pretty basic except the bracers he's equipped with. He will also have a glass bead necklace given to him by Milla, and his Lilium Orb which is unnecessarily complex rpg bullshit to help strengthen characters as they go and won't really be mentioned or even paid attention to in Exsilium. But he's got it, so I figured I should mention it now.

First PERSON: [ VIDEO ]
[ The video clicks on to a full screen image of a kid's frowning face. There's a few seconds of awkward silence before the tablet is pulled away from Jude's face to reveal some of the background. It's not very exciting though, considering he's sitting in his room and apparently hasn't done any decorating yet. ]
I hope I'm using this right...
[ And he seems to finally realize it's on and quickly flashes an awkward smile at the tablet. ]
Hi. Sorry about that. Anyone who has their tablet on should be able to hear me right now, right? Because I have a question for everyone here.
[ The smile falters. ]
While the concept of other worlds wasn't exactly foreign to me before I came here, I've never actually traveled away from my own. I'm sure I'm not the only person out there who hasn't, but I also can't imagine with so many worlds out there that there aren't any people here who have experience with interplanetary travel. I guess what I'm trying to ask here is which of you out there have gone between worlds before coming to Exsilium, and if you wouldn't mind could you tell me how you did it?
Third PERSON: Test Drive Link (A note, different assumed canon points in different threads here. SORRY ABOUT THAT.)

At his heart he's a
That's not to say Jude doesn't have his own problems.
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
